Location: Kirkwall, Orkney

Project Overview
This project combined traditional detailing with modern comfort, breathing new life into a well-loved period property while honouring its architectural heritage.
The renovation involved a full strip-out and internal reconfiguration to create a more contemporary layout suited to modern family living. The result is a series of bright, flowing spaces that celebrate the property’s original features while integrating modern materials and finishes.

Key aspects of the project included:
- The creation of a generous open-plan living and kitchen area that maximises the spectacular views across Kirkwall and Scapa Flow.
- Bespoke joinery throughout, including sash and case window refurbishment, period skirting, architraves, and cornice reinstatement.
- New bathrooms with high-quality fittings, natural stone tiling, and traditional sanitaryware.
- Installation of a new staircase and re-flooring throughout using engineered timber flooring to complement the original structure.
- Complete rewiring, replumbing, and insulation upgrades to meet current energy efficiency standards while preserving the building’s traditional fabric.
This project highlights R Clouston Ltd’s core strengths: craftsmanship rooted in tradition, attention to detail, and the ability to sympathetically modernise historic buildings. The finished result is a characterful and elegant home with an exceptional sense of place.
