Robert Clouston

Founder & Chairman

Bob Clouston is the founder and chairman of R Clouston Ltd. After completing his Highers at Kirkwall Grammar School, he initially considered studying engineering or architecture at university. However, a joinery apprenticeship opportunity arose the summer before his final year — and he seized it.

From early in his apprenticeship, Bob knew he wanted to start his own business. Just a few years after qualifying, he took the leap, and R Clouston Ltd was born.

Under Bob’s hands-on and passionate leadership, the company has grown from a small local joinery firm into one of Orkney’s most respected construction companies. While still actively involved, Bob now focuses on his role as Chairman — supporting the strategic direction of the business and mentoring the next generation of leadership.

Andy Smith

Managing Director

Andy Smith is the Managing Director of R Clouston Ltd. He began his career with the company as a young joiner and has steadily progressed through the ranks, gaining deep operational knowledge and a reputation for quality delivery.

Over the years, Andy has led on some of R Clouston Ltd’s largest and most technically demanding projects — including the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus in Stromness and, more recently, the new Kirkwall Care Home development.

Andy’s hands-on experience, combined with his leadership capability and deep understanding of the company’s culture, make him ideally placed to lead R Clouston Ltd into its next chapter.

Jamie Clouston

Executive Director

Jamie Clouston is the Executive Director of R Clouston Ltd and represents the second generation of the family business. With an honours degree in Construction Project Management and a background in consultancy and property development, he brings a modern, systems-focused approach to the company’s operations and future growth.

Jamie has worked with major contractors and clients across Scotland in a consultancy capacity, gaining valuable insight into large-scale project delivery and commercial development. Now fully involved in the business, he is focused on strengthening internal systems, improving project delivery processes, and helping to lead the company into its next phase.
